Students at Village Oaks elementary school in Novi, Michigan participate in an inline skating unit as part of their physical education class. The PE teacher, Dave Belanger, reports that the skating unit is the students’ favorite physical activity. Students in kindergarten through 4th grade receive instruction on safety equipment, forward skating, braking, and turning. Mr. Belanger explained that over the course of 5 skating sessions, the students get ample aerobic exercise and meet content expectations in many physical education domains (Movement Concepts, Outdoor Pursuits, Participation in Physical Activities, Social Benefits, and Feelings). The equipment needed for the skating unit was purchased from Rollerblade’s Skate in School Program.
