We are currently a week in and the students seem to be loving it! I is my job as the Physical Education Teacher to teach students a variety of activities and to try to promote health and fitness throughout the lifetime. With the excitement students have shared with me about this program I am confident we the school district have provided our 200 plus students with a great lifelong physical activity and a memory they will carry with them throughout their lives.
The first week was all about safety and I use progression as I would with any activity thought here at CS. The first skill students are thought is how to stand up on skates safely. They then learn the safest way to stand on the skates without them rolling out from under them. After they master getting up and standing, they learn how to fall down. Falling is the most important skill students learn. They are thought a safe way to fall that minimizes the risk of injury. The students also learn how to correctly come to a stop. The biggest emphasis is on safety throughout the unit. The way I explain this to the students is that we could be unsafe and still have fun, but if we do that put “fun before safety” we will not have the opportunity to bring the program back to Climax-Scotts Elementary School. It is more fun for everyone if we master the skills involved with skating. The first two weeks is mastering those skills that will help us be successful. The last week the gym will be completely converted to a roller rink. I will be setting up DJ lights, playing music, and each student will receive a couple glow bracelets to add to the fun.
The skating unit is something I am very excited for and began working on almost a year ago to be able to bring it to Climax-Scotts Community Schools. When I did my student teaching in Grand Rapids Public we did the skating program there and the students loved it and it was very successful and highlight to their year. I am happy to make this the highlight of our student’s school year and to give them a lifelong skill, and memories of their elementary school. I could not have done this and brought this to the school without the support of our teachers, staff, administration, and most of all the parents. I want to just give a big thank you from myself and on behalf of our students were at C-S to everyone that allowed us to bring an awesome program to our school. We have a great little district and I just want to share with the community some of the great things we are doing in our school district.
